The wood industry has been growing in recent years and, along with this, there is a growing need for a more strategic approach to machine safety in this sector, given that, according to Secretaria da Previdência (2019), in 2017 there were 4,947 work accidents involving workers in the wood industry. Given this fact, the following study aims to assess the risks involved in equipment used for the production of wood chips. To this end, a case study was conducted at an industrial plant consisting of three equipment: an impact conveyor belt for receiving wood, a wood chipper, and a conveyor belt for transporting the chipper output. Each piece of equipment underwent a risk and hazard assessment based on data obtained by the engineering departments of the Vantec company and a field analysis with the machine operators, where it was possible to identify the risks in the operation and maintenance of the machines. From this, a risk classification was carried out using the HRN (Hazard Rating Numbers) method, which made it possible to classify the risks. After a bibliographic search of specific standards for the adequacy of machines and equipment, such as NR-12 (2024), improvements were proposed for the equipment and the method of operation and maintenance, with the aim of contributing to a safer working environment, reducing accidents, and improving conditions for professionals working in this sector. After that, the HRN risk analysis was redone to certify that each risk analyzed was minimized with the measures proposed by this work. It was possible to observe that the measures proposed in this work are not extremely complex and can be easily adopted to achieve safe and accident-free operation.
