This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of replacing a currently signalized intersection with a grade-separated solution at the crossing of Madre Benvenuta Avenue and SC-404 highway in Florianópolis/SC, with the objective of reducing traffic congestion in the area. Performance indicators analyzed include maximum queue length, delay, and level of service for each approach, as well as average speed for each origin/destination. These performance indicators were obtained through traffic simulation using the Infraworks traffic analysis tool. Signal cycle lengths and timings were derived from field observations, and the traffic demand at the intersection was estimated based on vehicle counts conducted in 2021. The counts were extrapolated using expansion factors to obtain the average daily volume for the year 2023. Furthermore, applying the vehicle fleet growth rates of Santa Catarina, the demand for the year 2033, representing the design year of the intersection, was estimated. The results indicate that the current intersection operates at level of service F for three approaches, with significant queue formations. With the traffic projection for the next 10 years, three additional approaches also operate at level of service F. In contrast, the proposed intersection demonstrates efficiency by substantially reducing queues and delays, with the potential to significantly improve the traffic situation in the study area.
