Short-term load forecasting plays a fundamental role in the planning, operation, and control of the power system, and it has been used by utilities, system operators, generators, and energy traders. In Brazil, the National Electric System Operator (ONS) is responsible for making the official forecasts. The main contribution of this work for the conclusion of the undergraduate course in electrical engineering is the validation of a methodology for forecasting the short-term - day-ahead - electric power load, based on the premise that there is a correlation between electric power consumption and ambient temperature. The main concepts related to time series analysis are discussed, providing the theoretical basis necessary for the development of the work. Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) with LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) structure is the mathematics chosen to perform the predictions. The technique is evaluated using the metrics MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error) and coefficient of determination (R²). The open-source TensorFlow library is the platform for the implementation of the RNN. The data used - all public and freely accessible - comprises the period from 2014 to 2021, and includes historical information on load, temperature, and national holidays. The study is specific to the Southern Subsystem of the National Interconnected System (SIN), an author choice. The results have 95% accuracy in the forecast.
