This work presents the study, development, and validation of a wireless communication alternative designed to expand the PGEN system, which is used for energy monitor- ing in public educational institutions. Considering the infrastructure limitations found in remote substations, especially on agricultural campuses, this research investigates the application of the ESP-NOW protocol in Long Range mode, using the ESP32-C6 microcontroller and PCB-based Yagi-Uda directional antennas. The adopted methodol- ogy involved the electromagnetic characterization of the antennas using a PocketVNA vector network analyzer, the implementation of a transmitter–receiver system config- ured for point-to-point communication, and the execution of experimental field tests with distances ranging from 50 m to 1,000 m. Measurements included parameters such as RSSI, packet loss rate, transmission sequence, antenna gain, and overall link perfor- mance. The results demonstrated high communication robustness up to approximately 900 m, with zero packet loss and RSSI levels adequate for stable operation. However, environmental factors—including terrain unevenness, partial obstructions, and multi- path phenomena—significantly influenced performance, leading to abrupt losses at the 1 km limit, even with relatively high RSSI values. The analysis indicates that the pro- posed solution is technically feasible and represents a practical and easily deployable alternative for extending PGEN’s reach in scenarios with infrastructure constraints. This work contributes to the advancement of energy monitoring technologies and opens opportunities for system expansion in rural and remote environments, as well as en- courages future investigations aimed at improving robustness and adapting the link to different topographies and environmental conditions.
