Due to their simplicity of preparation, welding joints of the overlapping type are commonly used for the joining of structural components in the manufacture of metal parts. Traditionally, lap joints are welded by the GMAW process either manually or automatically in the horizontal welding position and with a 0 orientation of the joint, in which case their smallest edge is vertical. However, some manufacturing industries prefer to maintain the horizontal welding position with the 90 orientation of the joint, especially in the simultaneous welding of two lap joints located on opposite sides of the part. On the basis of these observations, this monograph investigates firstly which of the two lap joint orientations, 0˚ or 90˚, provides higher productivity, and secondly, if there is another orientation and/or welding position that results in higher production. For this purpose, a digital welding source, a tilting table with clamping device and an industrial robot were used to make the joints with a welding speed in the range of 0.6 to 1.3 m/min. Subsequently the respective macrographs were produced and evaluated according to the visual aspect and based on the ISO standards. The results showed that the most productive orientation is zero with 1.0 m/min of maximum welding speed and that negative orientations are also as productive as zero orientation.
