Despite being published many decades ago, Modbus protocol remains as one of the most popular protocols in the industrial environment, especially in the case of automation systems, which make use of PLCs, sensors and SCADA. However, it holds many limitations, especially when it comes to security issues, once it does not assure, by any means, data confidentiality and availability. Newer and better organized protocols have been published in the recent years, especially with the advent of Industry 4.0, which is the case of OPC UA, once it is more robust and presents several solutions regarding data security issues. Therefore, this work intends to study some of the limitations of the Modbus protocol and the consequences of its vast utilization in the industrial environment, also presenting a practicable solution capable of integrating OPC UA to Modbus predominant systems. Hence, a research about the impact of legacy systems utilizing Modbus has been developed, exploring its structural limitations and data security and integrity issues. Furthermore, the implementation of middlewares as a solution to these limitations is presented, making it possible to take advantage of the benefits of protocols like OPC UA while still maintaining the original structure of the system as a whole. Thus, a gateway prototype between Modbus and OPC UA has been developed, in order to facilitate multi-system integration and present potential security solutions. The gateway prototype was successfully capable of redirect data between protocols in both ways, in addition to a feature that also makes it capable of redirecting data between Modbus TCP and Modbus RTU.
