This undergraduate thesis investigates the feasibility of producing hydrogen and sodium aluminate from soda cans, exploring the chemical principles involved and the significance of this practice for environmental sustainability. The project proposes an extraction me- thod that can be applied in educational activities, aiming to raise students' awareness about recycling and renewable energy sources. Hydrogen is considered one of the ener- gy sources of the future, as it can be used in fuel cells to generate electricity in a clean manner, emitting only water vapor as a byproduct. Sodium aluminate, a compound resul- ting from the reaction of aluminum with alkaline solutions, is relevant for its industrial ap- plications and its role in water purification, particularly in regions with compromised water quality. Producing hydrogen and sodium aluminate from waste, such as aluminum cans, not only helps reduce waste but also enhances the use of renewable energy. By explo- ring this production in a practical way, this thesis contributes to the learning of chemical concepts and sparks interest in high school students for the subject, promoting a deeper and more engaging understanding of the importance of sustainable energy sources.
