Climate change is affecting precipitation patterns, with an increase in the frequency and intensity of rainfall projected for southern Brazil. This study aimed to evaluate the impacts of extreme precipitation events on the bathing water quality of the beaches of Santa Catarina Island. Precipitation data from the National Institute of Meteorology and bathing water quality reports from the Environmental Institute were used, covering the period from January 1992 to December 2023.To identify extreme events, daily precipitation percentiles were calculated for each month, resulting in the identification of 31 intense rainfall events, 22 of which occurred during spring and summer, the peak tourist season on the island. In the last eight years of the analyzed period, nine events were associated with three beaches equipped with wastewater treatment plants (WWTP): Canasvieiras, Jurerê, and Barra da Lagoa, and three beaches using individual systems (IS): Ingleses, Campeche, and Armação do Pântano do Sul. The analysis revealed variations in bathing water quality and in Escherichia coli levels, depending on the specific characteristics of each beach. In more than half of the analyzed events, increases in Escherichia coli concentrations were observed, most frequently at Barra da Lagoa and Armação do Pântano do Sul (89%), followed by Canasvieiras (78%), Campeche (67%), Jurerê (55%), and Ingleses (55%). Furthermore, a positive correlation was found between accumulated precipitation on the first, second, and third days preceding the samplings and the increase in Escherichia coli concentrations, regardless of the system type. These results indicate that even in areas with wastewater infrastructure, intense rainfall events can compromise water quality by acting as vectors for fecal contaminants, often linked to irregularities in the sewage system. Therefore, the increasing frequency of such events, combined with urbanization and tourism pressure, calls for structural and management improvements, such as the expansion of sewage networks, the construction of new treatment plants, and the intensification of inspections to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change on bathing water quality and the local economy.
