This study analyzed dentists’ perceptions regarding occupational exposure in dental radiology in a municipality in southern Brazil, with 31 Primary Health Care Units (PHCUs) and a population of 264,054 inhabitants. It is a qualitative case study conducted with seven dentists working in PHCUs that offer dental radiology services. Data were collected through a closed questionnaire and semi-structured interviews, and analyzed using Bardin’s thematic content analysis technique, supported by Atlas.ti software v.(2025). The results, presented in article format, reveal a dual scenario. On the one hand, all professionals reported using lead aprons on patients, and most recognized the importance of thyroid shields and basic principles of radiation protection, as well as the use of medium- and high-sensitivity films and the adjustment of technical parameters by age group. This demonstrates a commitment to patient safety, even in the absence of radiology specialists among the respondents. On the other hand, significant gaps were identified in technical and regulatory knowledge, such as unawareness of the effectiveness of rectangular collimators, the parallelism technique, occupational dose limits, and the role of regulatory bodies such as CNEN. There was also limited familiarity with current regulations, along with difficulties in determining the appropriate frequency of quality control tests and radiometric surveys. Such weaknesses point to the need for continuous training that strengthens technical-legal knowledge and promotes safer practices. Efficient management of services, including preventive maintenance and systematic quality control, also proves essential. It is concluded that the knowledge of primary health care dentists regarding occupational exposure and radiation protection in intraoral dental radiology falls short of expectations. This finding highlights the urgency of investing in continuing education in the workplace and in effective policies that ensure radiation protection for both professionals and patients. As a product of this study, an educational booklet on radiation protection was developed for dentists working with intraoral dental radiology in the public health service.
