Specialized mission-critical environments designed to support cyber systems, known as data centers, are growing in large proportion as the society becomes increasingly dependent on virtual resources. These environments have their availability as main metric of evaluation and complex support infrastructures to remain in continuous operation. On the other hand, the evolution of technology also brings new ways of generating, transmitting and distributing electricity, renewable and in accordance with the environment. To assimilate these new possibilities of the electric grid, the concept of smart grid has been developed to provide resilience to the network, among others features. This work perform a study of the operation of data centers in the context of smart grids and evaluates the impacts of this type of load on the power grid when operated intelligently. For this, the support possibilities in mission-critical environments have been identified and analyzed to present ways of special loads, as data centers, to provide support to the smart grid in order to assist on the balance between generetion and consumption of eletric energy. To achieve a high level of availability, data centers use redundant equipment, UPS, backup generators and cooling systems. The possibilities for this infrastructure to also benefit the electricity grid as a whole are assessed. Therefore, this work verifies which forms with the data center can support network resilience and uses a mathematical method to validate these possibilities. Through this study, it was possible to identify and examine different scenarios in which the data center will favor the power grid. So, when this strategy is adopted by several special loads together, the power grid will have new ways to maintain its resilience, also benefiting data centers with stable energy supply by the electrical system.
