Resíduos sólidos no Rio Itajaí-Mirim: diagnóstico e educação ambiental em Brusque/SC

A disposição incorreta dos resíduos sólidos pode contaminar o ambi-ente aquático ou terrestre, sendo esse um problema abordado nos Objetivos do Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS) da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU). O presente estudo surge como uma iniciativa para o município de Brusque/SC, visando caracterizar de forma qualiquantitativa os resíduos encontrados nas margens do rio Itajaí-Mi-rim, tendo em vista que tais resíduos podem ser transportados pelo rio ou por meio da drenagem pluvial por grandes distâncias e consequentemente alcançar o oceano Atlântico, contribuindo para o acúmulo desse material nos ambientes costeiros. Através da caracterização dos resíduos espera-se testar a hipótese de que haveria uma maior quantidade de resíduos nas margens do rio após períodos de maior precipitação, bem como maior quantidade de resíduos na área urbana do que na rural. Os resultados mostraram que a quantidade de resíduos na área urbana foi significativamente maior do que na área rural. As quantidades de resíduos em períodos de alta precipitação foram maiores do que nos períodos de baixa precipitação, em-bora essa diferença não seja significativa. O plástico foi o material mais abundante nas coletas. Não se observou diferença significativa na comparação das quantidades de resíduos antes e depois de um alerta da Defesa Civil. Neste caso, foi encontrado mais resíduos na área urbana, sendo o plástico o material mais abundante. Este es-tudo também promoveu junto à população e aos professores ações de educação ambiental em relação a essa temática, com o objetivo de sensibilizá-los para que reflitam sobre seus hábitos e atitudes em relação aos resíduos sólidos, tornando-os possíveis multiplicadores ambientais. Um sumário com sugestões e recomendações foi produzido e encaminhado aos tomadores de decisão municipais.
Incorrect disposal of solid waste can contaminate the aquatic or terrestrial environment, and this is a problem addressed in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN). This study arises as an initiative for the municipality of Brusque/SC, aiming to characterize in a qualitative and quantitative way the waste found on the banks of the Itajaí-Mirim River, considering that such waste can be transported by the river or through storm drainage for great distances and consequently reach the Atlantic Ocean, contributing to the accumulation of this material in coastal environments. Through the characterization of the waste, it is expected to test the hypothesis that there would be a greater amount of waste on the banks of the river after periods of greater precipitation, as well as a greater amount of waste in urban areas than in rural areas. The results showed that the amount of waste in urban areas was significantly greater than in rural areas. The amounts of waste during periods of high precipitation were greater than in periods of low precipitation, although this difference is not significant. Plastic was the most abundant material in the collections. No significant difference was observed when comparing the amounts of waste before and after a Civil Defense alert. In this case, more waste was found in the urban area, with plastic being the most abundant material. This study also promoted environmental education actions on this topic among the population and teachers, with the aim of raising awareness so that they reflect on their habits and attitudes regarding solid waste, making them potential environmental multipliers. A summary with suggestions and recommendations was produced and forwarded to municipal decision-makers.
