Low-carbon steels, such as ABNT 1020 or ASTM A36, generally have a lower cost compared to other metal alloys used in mechanical manufacturing. However, they are materials of low hardness and little resistance to corrosion or abrasion, resulting in less durability. One of the ways to increase the useful life of these materials is to apply, through deposition by electric arc, of surface coatings with properties such as abrasion resistance in the desired region of the part. As it is a fusion welding process, microstructural changes occur in the material and must be considered. This work aims to evaluate the effects of the chemical composition of the coating and the type of electric current on the mechanical properties of low carbon steels after application of hard chrome-based coatings (DIN E10-UM-60GR and E6- UM-60G). For the application of coatings, the welding process with a coated electrode (SMAW) was used, with the deposition of strands superimposed laterally. Abrasive wear tests, such as “rubber disk” and Vickers microhardness tests were carried out and, after analyzing the results, it was found that the E10-UM-60GR electrode (with higher C and Cr contents) yields superior performance, presenting less abrasive wear and obtaining a higher average hardness. The use of the E6-UM- 60G electrode generated strands with a lower degree of dilution and greater influence on the properties of the ZAC (zone affected by heat).
